Low serum high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol in childhood is associated with adolescent asthma

Abstract: Low-serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in childhood is associated with an increased risk for asthma in adolescence, suggesting a potential role of this lipoprotein in the pathogenesis of paediatric asthma.

“…Although prior studies have also assessed the relationship between serum HDL-C and asthma, the results have been heterogeneous with serum HDL-C levels either being increased, decreased, or unchanged in subjects with asthma (20,(43)(44)(45)(46)(47)(48)(49)(50). Similar to our findings, prior studies have also not found a change in serum LDL-C in subjects with asthma, whereas TC was either decreased or unchanged and TG levels were either increased or unchanged.…”

“…We calculated BMI (kg/m 2 ) and expressed it as age- and gender-specific z-scores based on the US Centers for Disease Control 2000 growth charts [15]. The methodology for the baseline assessment of serum lipids was described in our previous paper [11]. Lipids at follow-up were determined with the ILab 600 analyzer using ILab chemistry systems (Instrumentation Laboratory SpA, Monza, Italy).…”

“…The first survey in 2001-2003 involved all children (n = 19,849) attending the 6th form across all primary schools in Cyprus and focused on nutrition and physical fitness, and included measurements of serum total cholesterol, low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-C, triglycerides and body mass index (BMI). The second survey in 2007 evaluated 3,982 subjects who were selected randomly from the subjects who took part in the first survey (20.1%) and focused on respiratory health (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood - ISAAC) and risk factors for asthma [11]. …”
