Much empirical support of self-control theory is based on the 24-item scale conceptualized by Grasmick and his colleagues. This study examined the dimensionality of the scale. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analyses, and a structural equation model (SEM) produced results that are discordant with much prior research. The Grasmick et al. scale was not unidimensional, more complex theoretical iterations failed to meet most goodness-of-fit statistics, and considerable refinement via modification indices was needed before a measurement model that fit the data could be found. Further refinement is required to justify it as the quintessential measure of self-control. According to Pratt and Cullen (2000, p. 931), the popularity, controversy, and accuracy of self-control theory are some of the reasons why its authors are among the most cited criminologists in the world. Since 1990, dozens of scholars have devised ways to operationalize self-control and to examine its predictive power empirically.

S’inspirant de la théorie de la dissuasion conditionnelle, cet article étudie la relation entre les restrictions associées au permis de conduire, les mécanismes de contrôles sociaux formels et informels et les intentions délictueuses au sein d’un échantillon de 392 jeunes détenteurs d’un permis de conduire régulier ou bien d’un permis restreint (probatoire ou d’apprenti). Dans le cadre du programme d’accès graduel à la conduite québécois, les titulaires d’un permis restreint ont entre autres un nombre limité de points d’inaptitude et sont soumis à une tolérance zéro relativement à l’alcool au volant. Les résultats des analyses de régression montrent que les détenteurs d’un permis restreint manifestent moins d’intentions délictuelles que ceux qui ont un permis régulier. Les résultats établissent également que les pairs délinquants ont moins d’influence sur les détenteurs d’un permis restreint comparativement à ceux qui détiennent un permis régulier. Enfin, l’internalisation de la norme apparaît comme le mécanisme qui prévient le plus efficacement les intentions délictuelles parmi tous les conducteurs.

ZusammenfassungIn diesem Beitrag werden zwei aktuelle und kontrovers diskutierte Ansätze innerhalb der kriminologischen Forschung einem empirischen Theorienvergleich unterzogen: zum einen die „General Theory of Crime“ von Gottfredson und Hirschi (1990) und zum anderen die „Theory of Planned Behavior“ von Ajzen (1985,1988,1991). Der Vergleich der standardisierten Pfadkoeffizienten und der Zuwachs an erklärter Varianz im simultanen Test zeigt, dass die „Theory of Planned Bahavior“ die abhängige Variable „Fahren unter Alkoholeinfluss“ besser erklären kann als die „General Theory of Crime“. Im letzten Teil der empirischen Analyse werden Möglichkeiten der Integration der beiden Theorien geprüft. Abschließend werden einige allgemeinere Schlussfolgerungen für empirische Theorienvergleiche in den Sozialwissenschaften gezogen.
