Low sclareol by‐product of clary sage concrete: chemical analysis of a waste product of the perfume industry

Abstract: In line with the sustainable development objectives of the Claryssime® research programme, a by‐product of Salvia sclarea concrete (low sclareol by‐product) obtained from industrial sclareol purification, was subjected to full chemical fractionation, characterization and assessment of its economic potential as a by‐product synergy candidate. Fractionation and intensive semi‐preparative high‐performance liquid chromatography isolation led to the characterization of several compounds that belong to different met… Show more

“…This structural similarity has made sclareol the most promising starting material for semisynthesis production of ambrafuran [ 5 , 44 ]. The main industrial extraction procedure to isolate sclareol from clary sage involves hydro-distillation of the aerial parts of the plant, followed by solvent extraction of the remaining plant material [ 45 ].…”

“…Sclareol is the starting material for synthesizing ambergris-like odorants Ambrox ® , a valuable compound used in perfumery, and in cleaning products and household care (air fresheners, disinfectants, laundry detergents) 16 . Utilization of residual biomass after distillation and EO production of clary sage for further conversion into value-added products such as sclareol, and other diterpenes (sclerenbol, ambecler, hetabrol, and tabeceron) is a known and applied technique [17][18][19] .…”
