Low RCS Microstrip Patch Antenna Using Frequency-Selective Surface and Microstrip Resonator

Abstract: Abstract-A low radar cross section (RCS) microstrip antenna is proposed and investigated in this letter. This design is based on implementation of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) and microstrip resonators. By using the FSS ground instead of the solid metal ground, out-of-band RCS reduction can be realized. Moreover, in-band RCS reduction can be obtained by loading microstrip resonators. Significant RCS reduction has been accomplished in the frequency ranges of 3-10GHz. Compared with the reference antenna,… Show more

“…That means, it is mandatory to reduce the RCS of an antenna. Many ways have been reported to reduce RCS from the last few years, such as frequency selective surfaces (FSS), [3][4][5] artificial magnetic conductor (AMC), [6][7][8] and electromagnetic band-gap structures (EBG). [8][9][10] Metamaterial (MMs) are artificial materials, which are engineered to possess unique EM properties that are not found in naturally occurring materials.…”

“…This approach is advantageous than many other techniques used for RCSR as these techniques degrade the antenna performance. Ying Liu et.al [16] investigated a low RCS microstrip antenna. The basis of design is microstrip resonator and implementation of FSS out of RCSR can be achieved by replacing metal ground with FSS ground.…”

“…In [12], EBG structure is used to reduce in-band RCS of a patch antenna and the RCS decreased more than 10 dB at the operation frequency. By using FSS ground instead of traditional solid metal ground, the RCS of antenna can be reduced [13][14][15][16]. But due to the replacement of the ground, the power leakage reduces the gain all the same.…”
