Low prevalence of HPV detection and genotyping in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer using single-step PCR followed by reverse line blot

Abstract: Our study demonstrates low prevalence of HPV infection in FFPE bladder cancer tissue, arguing against the etiological role of HPV in non-muscle urothelial carcinogenesis.

“…Cyclophosphamide, chronic irritation from a stone and exposure to paints have a definite role in the development of bladder cancer (8-12). The role of HPV in bladder cancer is contradictory with publications supporting both its causative role in bladder cancer and others suggesting that HPV does not have any connection with bladder cancer (15, 16). The rarity of bladder cancer in young patients can be explained by the lack of hereditary bladder cancer syndromes, the fact that young patients are not usually exposed to common carcinogens, and of course in case of exposure to carcinogens (mainly smoking), the reported necessary interval of at least 20 years between the exposure and the development of bladder cancer cannot be satisfied to young patients and especially in our population of patients younger than 30 years, smoking had to be accompanied by one additional risk factor (2).…”

“…Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a live attenuated bovine tuberculosis vaccine that is the first choice for intravesical treatment, and it is the gold standard for the immunotherapy of superficial bladder cancer (3)(4)(5). Genitourinary tumours, such as bladder cancer (6) and benign diseases, including condyloma acuminatum and cervical genital warts, are closely related to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection (7)(8)(9). Clinical studies have established that BCG immunotherapy exerts a specific effect on genital warts of the genitourinary system (7,9).…”

“…Currently, there are several studies that described a correlation between HPV and development of bladder cancer. However, their found contradictory results [12][13][14].…”
