Low power LC-voltage controlled oscillator with −140 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz offset using on-chip inductor design in 0.13 µm RF-CMOS process for S-Band application

Abstract: Purpose The paper aims to present the novel design approach for a low power LC-voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) design with low phase noise that too targeted at the most sought band of Bluetooth applications. Owing to their crucial role in a wide variety of modern applications, VCO and phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizers have been the subject of extensive research in recent years. In fact, VCO is one of the key components being used in a modern PLL to provide local frequency signal since a few d… Show more

“…When discrete transformer Baluns are wrapped on ferromagnetic cores with copper wire their on copper loss, core loss and impedance mismatch all add to the total conversion losses. The balun is a specialised Radiofrequency circuit that facilitates the connection between differential and singleended Radio-frequency circuits [23].Explanations and illustrations of the current reusable on differential structure make the topology straightforward to grasp and facilitate architectural iteration [24], [25]. To improve the linearity of the mixer, a transformer with passive filter is utilised to provide two separate biases between the switch stage and transconductance stage [26].…”

“…In essence, for an LC tank resonator, the Q factor is related to the parasitic resistance of inductors and capacitors. 15 Work in some architectures proposed on deliberately reducing the Q of the tank by directly connecting the 50 Ω external termination to the VCO outputs to achieve a fast oscillation start-up. 16 However, the power consumption is relatively high as a tail current of 70 mA is required to compensate back the Q of the LC tank.…”
