Low Post-operative Mortality after Surgery on Patients with Screening-detected Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A Swedvasc Registry Study

Abstract: The contemporary post-operative mortality after AAA surgery was low in this national audit of patients with screening-detected AAAs and age-matched controls. Patients with screening-detected AAAs have the same frequency of complications at 30 days as patients with non-screening-detected AAA. This study gives further support to national screening programs for the detection of AAA in men.

“…DREAM study reported the 30-day mortality after EVAR as 0.4% [ 12 ]. In Swedvasc registry patients with screening-detected AAA had 1.0% mortality after surgery and 0% after EVAR [ 13 ]. Age was an independent risk covariant of short-term mortality in all patients and in 70+ group.…”

“…During the Swedvasc period, screening for AAA has been successfully introduced since 2006 and from 2015, 65-year-old males in the whole country are invited to attend an ultrasonographic investigation [ 28 ]. In this group of patients open repair is significantly more frequent than EVAR as compared to those with AAAs not detected by screening[ 18 ]. In patients treated with open repair there was no difference in 30-day, 90-day or 1‑year mortality in AAA detected by screening compared to AAA not detected by screening in controls (1.0% vs. 3.2%, 2.1 vs. 4.5% and 4.1 vs. 5.8%, respectively, all not significant).…”
