Quantum measurements using single-photon detectors are opening interesting new perspectives in diverse fields such as remote sensing, quantum cryptography and quantum computing. A particularly demanding class of applications relies on the simultaneous detection of correlated single photons. In the visible and near infrared wavelength ranges suitable single-photon detectors do exist. However, low detector quantum efficiency or excessive noise has hampered their mid-infrared (MIR) counterpart. Fast and highly efficient single-photon detectors are thus highly sought after for MIR applications. Here we pave the way to quantum measurements in the MIR by the demonstration of a room temperature coincidence measurement with non-degenerate twin photons at about 3.1 μm. The experiment is based on the spectral translation of MIR radiation into the visible region, by means of efficient up-converter modules. The up-converted pairs are then detected with low-noise silicon avalanche photodiodes without the need for cryogenic cooling.

For the first time an upconversion based detection scheme is demonstrated for lidar measurements of atmospheric CO 2 -concentrations, with a hard target at a range of 3 km and atmospheric backscatter from a range of ∼450 m. The pulsed signals at 1572 nm are upconverted to 635 nm, and detected by a photomultiplier tube, to test how the upconversion technology performs in a long range detection system. The upconversion approach is compared to an existing direct detection scheme using a near-IR detector with respect to signal-to-noise ratio and quantum efficiency. It is for the first time analyzed how the field-of-view of a receiver system, for long range detection, depends critically on the parameters for the nonlinear upconversion process, and how to optimize these parameters in future systems.

The ro-vibrational spectra around 3 μm of four small hydrocarbons (C 2 H 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 4 ) at 296, 550 and 820 K have been investigated using infrared degenerate four-wave mixing (IR-DFWM). The spectra were recorded in gas flows of nitrogen with small admixtures of the hydrocarbons. A fused silica glass tube surrounded by an electric heating wire was used to heat the gas flows. The recorded IR-DFWM spectra are compared with simulations using the spectral information available in the HITRAN database, in order to identify spectral lines. The measurements demonstrate good signal to noise ratio and good sensitivity even at elevated temperatures. Several weak hot lines were detected that are not included in the current database. This paper demonstrates the potential of IR-DFWM for purposes of investigating spectral lines at elevated temperatures, which is often a challenging task with conventional absorption spectroscopy techniques. The possibility of applying IR-DFWM for combustion diagnostics of small hydrocarbons is discussed from the detection limits of the measurements and the potential water line interference. Because of the non-linear nature of the DFWM technique, it provides much higher contrast for strong lines of small molecules over backgrounds of high-density weak lines, which commonly exist in hot gas flows of thermochemical reactions.
