Low-noise low-mass front end electronics for low-background physics experiments using germanium detectors

Abstract: A low-noise resistive-feedback front-end electronics assem bly has been developed for use with p-type point contact (PPC) Ge detectors in low background experiments. The front end was designed to have a low mass and potentially low radioactivity. It is fabricated on a fused silica substrate, and consists of a low-noise JFET, a feedback resistor formed from an amorphous Ge thin film, and feedback capacitor based on the stray capacitance between circuit traces. The substrate provides the appropriate thermal impe… Show more

“…Signals from the PPC detectors are amplified and shaped by a custom low-noise resistive-feedback preamplifier with a measured equivalent noise charge of ∼85 eV in Gedetector-equivalent FWHM resolution [19]. The amplifier provides low-gain and high-gain outputs that are digitized separately by a custom 14-bit 100 MHz VME-based digitizer designed for the GRETINA experiment [20].…”

“…The previous lowest noise performance of this crystal with a low mass JFET front end was 85 eV-FWHM as indicated in the ENC curve from Ref. [24]. The primary factor responsible for this improvement was the decreased capacitance of detector and FET, each about 40% to 50% of their previous values.…”

“…The front-end boards use a design developed for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, called low-mass front-ends (LMFEs). The LMFEs are charge-sensitive amplifiers that use a resistive feedback design [5]. A charge-injection line is provided to allow characterization and monitoring of the LMFEs by external pulsers.…”
