Low-mass lepton-pair production in p-Be collisions at 450 GeV/c

Abstract: (to be submitted to Zeit. Phys. C} for muons, and ~ 40% for electrons.level, on any new source of lepton pairs is ~ 20% of the hadronic decay contribution of the major hadronic sources is set by the data. The upper limit, at 90% confidence decays, and there is no need to invoke any "unconventional" source. The normalisation the low-mass spectrum can be explained satisfactorily by lepton pairs from hadronic p-Be collisions at 450 GeV/ c at the CERN SPS. For both electron and muon pairsWe report on the productio… Show more

“…In this respect, dileptons are particularly well suited for an investigation of the early phases of high-energy heavy-ion collisions because they can leave the reaction volume essentially undistorted by final-state interactions. Indeed, dileptons from heavy-ion collisions have been measured by the DLS collaboration at the BEVALAC [3][4][5][6] and by the CERES [7,8], HELIOS [9,10], NA38 [11] and NA50 [12] collaborations at SPS energies.…”

“…The in-medium properties of vector mesons have been addressed experimentally so far by dilepton measurements at the SPS, both for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions [10,11,12,13]. As proposed by Li et al [14], the enhancement in S + Au reactions compared to p + Au collisions in the invariant mass range 0.3 ≤ M ≤ 0.7 GeV might be due to a shift of the ρ meson mass.…”
