Low lymphocyte interferon-gamma production and variable proliferative response in anorexia nervosa patients

Abstract: Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in 14 patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) was significantly lower than in 14 age-matched healthy controls. Follow-up samples in four patients displayed low levels, except in two when they recovered the IFN-gamma production as the hormonal cycles were restored. A large interindividual variation for the lymphocyte proliferative response was observed in 30 AN patients. DNA synthesis of PBMC was normal in 8 patients (27%), signifi… Show more

“…Regarding cytokine production in AN patients, variable results have also been reported from studies carried out with very different designs. An inhibition of PHA-induced IFN-g production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of AN patients in relation to that of age-matched controls has been found previously (Schattner et al, 1990b;Polack et al, 1993), which could be related to an impaired response of the immune system against pathogens.…”

“…Although it is difficult to establish how this cytokine modulation by yoghurt intake may influence the immune system of the anorexic patients, some benefits could be presumed from this stimulation since previous results have pointed to an apparent inhibition of PHA-induced IFN-g production by PBMCs in AN patients in relation to that of age-matched controls (Schattner et al, 1990;Polack et al, 1993). However, it is also difficult to know if the response in vivo against a pathogen would be similar to the one observed in vitro against the mitogen.…”

“…However, it is evident that not all AN patients display the same changes in immune function and cytokine production . A variable lymphocyte proliferative response to different mitogens has been reported in anorectic subjects (Polack et al, 1993). Different results for cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) have also been reported.…”
