“…IH is one of the most common surgical complications, 26,27 with an incidence ranging from 4% to 21% in studies with long-term follow-up. [28][29][30][31] Various risk factors play a role in the development of IHs. Reported risk factors include female gender, 9 a history of inguinal hernia, 21 the presence of a nearby stoma, smoking history, and diabetes.…”

“…A simple comparative calculation of the incision needed to pass a 10 mm trocar (outer diameter 11mm) vs the incision for introduction of three instruments with an external diameter of 5 mm each refutes this assumption: Notwithstanding the elasticity of the fascial sheaths and the skin, a minimum incision length of more or less 17 mm is needed for a "10 mm" trocar and three SPS instruments. The bias against a greater inherent risk for poor wound healing with SPS was fed by numerous publications that reported early learning curve data resulting in meta-analysis similar to that in[ 23 ]. A minimized incision is particularly beneficial in those types of surgery where small meshes have to be applied in the abdominal cavity for hernia reconstruction or where no or very small specimens have to be removed.…”

“…The incidence here is clearly higher than the incidence at 6 months or 1 year (4.5%), as reported in the meta-analysis of Jensen et al . 10 (40 studies, n =5618). This raises the question whether the true incidence of incisional hernias after SILC is underreported because of the short follow-up period 11 .…”
