Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Stimulation of Condylar Growth in Rats

Abstract: LIPUS application may affect mandibular growth pattern in rats acting at the cartilage and bone level. The effect of LIPUS on the growing condyle is expressed through a variation in trabecular shape and perimeter. A greater response is achieved when stimulated for 20 minutes instead of 10 minutes daily.

“…Oyonarte et al (25) reported that LIPUS stimulation produced histological changes in the condylar cartilage of growing rats, whereas Ogurtan et al (14) concluded that LIPUS stimulation had no effect on the antebrachial growth plates of rabbits. These differences in outcome may have been related to differences in the target tissues examined, and the previous studies involved morphological examinations of cephalometric radiographs or CT images after the rats had been sacrificed.…”

“…Therefore, many experimental studies on animal models have been carried out in order to investigate alternative methods of stimulating mandibular growth, such as pulsed electromagnetic field [25,26], low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) [27][28][29][30][31][32][33], light emitting diode (LED) [34], low-level laser (LLL) [34], growth hormone [32], and gene therapy [33,35,36].…”

“…19,20 Ayrıca literatürde mandibular kondilin kemik büyüme modifikasyonunda artış rapor edilmiştir. [21][22][23][24] Kök hücrelerinde etkili olduğu gösterilmiştir. 25 Kök hücre çalışmalarında ve doku mühendisliği uygulamalarında faydaları olabileceği bildirilmiştir.…”
