Low-grade intraductal carcinoma of salivary glands: A systematic review of this rare entity

Abstract: Background: Low-grade intraductal carcinomas are rare, malign tumors of salivary glands most commonly affecting parotid gland. It is a slow-growing tumor considered with a favourable prognosis after surgical excision. Methods: To define the characteristics and management of low-grade intraductal carcinoma a systematic review was performed using the electronic databases Pubmed, Cochrane and Scopus. A new case report was also described. Results: Including this case the review of literature identified only 54 cas… Show more

“…Distinguishing between SC and intercalated IDC can be challenging, as both entities share histological, cytological, and immunohistochemical (expression of S100, SOX10 & mammaglobin) features (36)(37)(38)(39) (7,40). In our study, mammaglobin expression is shared by SC and intercalated IDC (83.3% and 85.7%, respectively), while MUC4 was restricted to SC (all 30 IDCs were negative).…”

“…Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma and salivary duct carcinoma in situ were previously categorized as “low-grade salivary duct carcinoma”; however, they have now been collectively categorized as intraductal carcinomas; low-grade and high-grade, respectively [ 1 , 4 ]. Intraductal carcinomas are rare salivary gland malignancies that most frequently affect the parotid gland and are only rarely noted at other sites [ 2 ]. They are not particularly aggressive and do not commonly invade the surrounding tissues.…”

“…They are not particularly aggressive and do not commonly invade the surrounding tissues. The tumor mass also grows slowly and facial nerve involvement is rare [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]. Giovacchini et al [ 2 ] summarized 54 cases of intraductal carcinoma; however, due to the small number of cases, no statistical significance was observed.…”
