“…In line with this evidence, we previously indicated that higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) in African men is associated with increased blood pressure (BP; Kruger et al, 2012), while attenuated total glutathione (tGSH) and upregulated glutathione reductase activity were associated with increased carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in hypertensive African men (Schutte et al, 2009) and Caucasian men (van Zyl, Huisman, & Mels, 2016), respectively. We also observed a significant higher inflammatory status in African men compared to Caucasian men in this study cohort (Van der Walt, Malan, Uys, & Malan, 2013). These results clearly indicate ethnic differences between African and Caucasian men with regard to oxidative stress-related and inflammatory markers as well as associated BP elevations and vascular alterations.…”

“…In this regard, elevated serum estradiol levels reduce nocturnal erections and can contribute to ED, independent of testosterone levels. 35 38 Sixth, inflammation is known to be common among HD patients; 24 26 OH has been shown to aggravate systemic inflammation in this population. 45 Systemic inflammation may adversely affect sexual function by interfering with sex hormones.…”
