Low free serum histidine concentration in rheumatoid arthritis. A measure of disease activity.

Abstract: A B S T R A C T A study of sera from 285 patients with definite or classical rheumatoid arthritis (including 37 patients receiving no anti-inflammatory drugs) and sera from 67 healthy subjects has confirmed 10 published reports of a statistically significant decreased blood histidine concentration in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Contrastingly, in sera from 231 patients with a variety of acute and chronic illnesses other than rheumatoid arthritis, no statistically significant hypohistidinemia was observe… Show more

“…The PS group had weighed value for inflammatory lesion, pustule, cyst, nodule, and pigmentation (see S1 Table). Consistent with our observations, decreases in serum AAs have been described for several chronic inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic kidney disease [45][46][47]. Concerning dermatology, AAs chelate calcium ions and stimulate exfoliation of the stratum corneum, accelerating the turnover of the stratum corneum [48].…”

“…6 Studies have shown that people under oxidative stress or having inflammatory diseases, such as CKD or rheumatoid arthritis, tend to have low histidine levels. 7, 26 Inflammation plays a critical role in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, 27 and pro-inflammatory cytokines are related to the early stages of atherosclerosis, a primary cause of CHD. 28 In the present study, we show that high histidine levels were associated with reduced risk of developing CHD in two independent populations.…”

“…Glycine levels are effectively measured in plasma in both normal patients and individuals with inborn errors of glycine metabolism [26] . A wide range of symptoms, from mental and physical retardation to poor intellectual functioning, emotional instability, tremor, ataxia and psychosis, hallmark elevated blood histidine [27,28] . Based on the analysis of the available data, the occurrence and development of cerebral ischemia involves several abnormal structures and malfunctions [29] , indicating that cerebral www.nature.com/aps Guo ZL et al Acta Pharmacologica Sinica npg ischemia is a typical multi-pathway and multi-system complex disease, which is not induced via a single abnormal pathway or the abnormal expression of a single system [30] .…”
