“…A high fat diet should be also avoided by IBD patients due to the fact that it could lead to an accumulation of bile acids (like deoxycholic acid) that could inhibit Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes phyla growth and lead to dysbiosis [54]. A recent cross-over study [121] demonstrated that a low-fat diet reduces markers of inflammation and dysbiosis and improves quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis. In particular, it has been shown that low-fat diets increase the proportion of Bacteroidetes in the microbiota from 14.6% to 24.02% (p = 0.015) and decrease that of Actinobacteria from 13.69% to 7.82% (p = 0.017).…”

“…The key nutrient difference between these diets was the lower fat content in the LFD; however, the LFD diet was also significantly higher in fiber and lower in sugar than the iSAD. Both diets led to improved QoL, but the LFD also led to a significant reduction in serum amyloid A and a trend towards a decrease in C-reactive protein (CRP) that was not observed in the iSAD group [ 68 ]. This suggests that the combination of low fat and high fiber provides additional clinical benefits beyond only increasing fruit and vegetable intakes as recommended in the iSAD group.…”

“…This suggests that the combination of low fat and high fiber provides additional clinical benefits beyond only increasing fruit and vegetable intakes as recommended in the iSAD group. In all three food-based fiber intervention studies there were high rates of remission maintenance as well as improved clinical outcomes and symptomology [ 66 , 67 , 68 ]. Additionally, the diets were all well tolerated.…”
