Low energy refurbishment strategies for health buildings

Abstract: Public health buildings contribute significantly to UK carbon emissions. New build initiatives have received more attention than the considerable opportunities to reduce carbon emissions within the retained health estate. The research reported here has considered the environmental performance of a typical medium rise, medium depth, concrete-framed, late 1960s acute hospital following low energy environmental design interventions. The interventions are made to optimize daylighting and natural ventilation/coolin… Show more

“…Large buildings are the cause of a remarkable part of worldwide energy consumption, and keeping in mind that a huge part of large buildings is represented by public buildings, the development of customized refurbishment approaches is critical for the benefit of the whole society [1]. Evaluating refurbishment actions requires that an accurate model of the current and design scenarios of the building are setup.…”

“…Then, low cost tailored energy saving measures were identified and implemented, such as the integration of variable speed drives. The arrangement of a very detailed energy baseline is particularly critical in the case of complex strategic buildings, such as those ones owned by public administrations, where the development of a detailed consumption breakdown [2] can be quite demanding, due to the shortage of management systems. The only way auditors can accurately survey, diagnose inefficiencies and quantify energy savings that can be achieved by means of enhanced control is by means of tailored simulations.…”

“…In particular, complex strategic buildings, such as public buildings owned by public administrations, ask for the development of a detailed consumption breakdown, in order to accurately analyse the actual causes of current consumption and in order to prospect possible improvements [1]. To this aim, their actual operation must be carefully simulated by means of tailored models.…”
