Low-Cost Safe Water for the World: A Practical Interim Solution

Abstract: A very large segment of the world's population is without a microbiologically safe water supply. It is estimated that in Latin America more than 40% of the population is utilizing water of dubious quality for human consumption. This figure is probably even higher in Africa and areas of southeast Asia. Water used for drinking and food preparation can be an important route of transmission for many of the most widespread and debilitating of the diseases that afflict humans. The cholera pandemic which struck Latin… Show more

“…However, such water is known to be prone to microbial contamination unless stored and used properly and may require point-of-use treatment and/ or on-site disinfection. 251 Containers for on-site storage of water should be emptied and cleaned 252 as frequently as possible and, when possible, inverted to dry. Putting hands and contaminated objects into stored water should be avoided at all times.…”

“…Unsanitary and inadequately protected water containers could contribute to the contamination of water at the point-of-use (Dunker, 2001). Inadequate storage conditions have been shown to result in the increase in the number of some microorganisms such as heterotrophic bacteria and total coliform bacteria over time (Reiff et al, 1996). Potable water is critical for PLWHA; they need it for taking antiretroviral (ARV) medication, bathing, washing soiled linen and clothing and for essential hygiene, which reduces exposure to opportunistic infections (WRC, 2005).…”

“…A contaminação da água está associada a fatores como economia e localização geográfica (REIFF et al, 1996;RAUCHER, 1996). Esta água pode servir como um meio para disseminar doenças causadas por micro-organismos tais como o Vibrio cholerae, Yersinia enterocolitica, Escherichia coli e Cryptosporidium sp.. A contaminação fecal combinada com a falta de tratamento hídrico adequado têm sido culpadas por muitas epidemias (BRIDGMAN et al, 1995).…”
