Low cost fiber-to-the-node access network design

Abstract: Considering the introduction of new internet protocol (IP) services, such as the high definition television (HDTV) over IP (IPTV) service, new network architectures and technologies should be introduced for the access network to improve the access rate. Actually, the best solution is to use the fiberto-the-home (FTTH) architecture. However, this solution is still costly and cannot be widely deployed today. An interesting tradeoff is the fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) architecture, which reduces the copper portion of… Show more

“…Moreover, only one OLT location is considered in their model. Another example is [4], in which the split ratio is not considered. Certainly, MIP models can be very detailed.…”

“…This work considers only upstream flow of data, as a downlink traffic is negligent. It is worth noting that other access network technologies such as Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ASDL), which has limited frequency bands, and Fiber to Node (FTTN) [24] [25] which incorporates copper and fiber optic, do exist, however will not be considered as GPON is adopted for the BT 21CN.…”
