The aim of this study is to find out the facile and effective pretreatment technique to enhance the capacity of jute stick powder (JSP) in adsorbing dye from raw textile effluent. Hence, different pretreatment techniques, i.e., radiation treatment, alkali treatment, ammonia treatment, steam treatment and CaCl 2 treatment were applied to JSP and the adsorbing performance were examined for synthetic dye solutions (Blue FCL and Red RL dye). Different gamma radiation doses were applied on JSP and optimum dye removal efficiency was found at 500 krad in removing these two dyes (50 ppm) from solutions. Among the different pretreatment techniques, gamma irradiated JSP (500 Krad) exhibits highest dye uptake capacity for RED RL dye, whereas steam-treated JSP shows highest performance in adsorbing blue FCL dye. Subsequently, we applied the gamma irradiated and steam-treated JSP on real textile effluent (RTE) and these two techniques shows potentiality in adsorbing dye from raw textile effluent and in reducing BOD 5 , COD load and TOC to some extent as well. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis also proved that dye has been adsorbed on pretreated JSP.

Abstract:In the present study, the enrichment and isolation of textile effl uent decolorizing bacteria were carried out in wheat bran (WB) medium. The isolated bacterium Providencia rettgeri strain HSL1 was then tested for decolorization of textile effl uent in consortium with a dyestuff degrading fungus Aspergillus ochraceus NCIM 1146. Decolorization study suggests that A. ochraceus NCIM 1146 and P. rettgeri strain HSL1 alone re moves only 6 and 32% of textile effl uent American Dye Manufacturing Institute respectively in 30 h at 30 ±0.2°C of microaerophilic incubation, while the fungal-bacterial consortium does 92% ADMI removal within the same time period. The fungal-bacterial consortium exhibited enhanced decolorization rate due to the induction in activities of catalytic enzymes laccase (196%), lignin peroxidase (77%), azoreductase (80%) and NADH-DCIP reductase (84%). The HPLC analysis confi rmed the biodegradation of textile effl uent into various metabolites. Detoxifi cation studies of textile effl uent before and after treatment with fungal-bacterial consortium revealed reduced toxicity of degradation metabolites. The effi cient degradation and detoxifi cation by fungal-bacterial consortium pre-grown in agricultural based medium thus suggest a promising approach in designing low-cost treatment technologies for textile effl uent.

<b>Strategies for decolorization of textile industry effluents by white-rot-fungi with peach palm residue

ABSTRACT. The aim of this interdisciplinary approach is to provide innovative solutions to environmental problems, in particular, improving the treatment of textile industrial effluents and finding a use for the residual biomass generated from palm tree (Bactris gasipaes) extraction. Three types of white-rot fungi were cultivated applying different strategies for the decolorization the textile effluents: i) solid-state fermentation (SSF), ii) submerged fermentation (SF), and iii) adsorption. In all cases, it was used the peach-palm residue. In the SSF strategy, the decolorization process and laccase production were enhanced by increasing the concentration of final effluent. Even though the highest decolorization percentage (80%) was attained after 10 days of fermentation with G. lucidum EF 31 applied in the treatment of a final effluent, no significant differences were found in relation to the other two fungi. The decolorization efficiency obtained in the SF was lower compared with SSF, however, the presence of final effluent in the SF process improved the laccase activity. It was noted that the addition of peach-palm residue in this system provides a habitat for the fungus as well as a suitable source material for laccase production with the consequent decolorization of the effluent. O objetivo desta abordagem interdisciplinar é fornecer soluções inovadoras para problemas ambientais, em particular, na melhoria do tratamento de efluentes industriais têxteis e encontrar um uso para a biomassa residual gerada a partir da extração de palmeiras (Bactris gasipaes). Três tipos de fungos de podridão-branca foram cultivados aplicando diferentes estratégias para a descoloração dos efluentes têxteis: i) fermentação em estado sólido (SSF), ii) fermentação submersa (SF), e iii) adsorção. Em todos os casos, foi utilizado o resíduo de pupunha. Na estratégia SSF, o processo de descoloração e a produção de lacase aumentaram conforme a concentração de efluente final aumentava. Embora a maior percentagem de descoloração (80%) tenha sido obtida após 10 dias de fermentação com G. lucidum EF 31 aplicado no tratamento com efluente final, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas em relação aos outros dois fungos. A eficiência de descoloração obtida no SF foi menor em comparação com SSF, no entanto, a presença de efluente final no processo SF aumentou a produção da lacase. Foi observado que a adição do resíduo de pupunha neste sistema serviu como habitat natural para o fungo, além do mais, serviu como material de suporte e fonte adequada para a produção de lacase, como consequência descoloração do efluente.
