Low-cost Adsorbents Derived from Agricultural By-products/Wastes for Enhancing Contaminant Uptakes from Wastewater: A Review

Abstract: A major threat to the comfort of human life has been imposed by increased industrialization and urbanization. The generation and disposal of huge amounts of toxic materials and pollutants have heavily contaminated our environment. Some Organics such as synthetic dyes (SD) and heavy metals (HM) are becoming increasingly prevalent as the most dangerous pollutants in soil and surface water environments. They are causing great concern worldwide due to their toxicity to many life forms.Environmentally friendly util… Show more

“…Some of the mechanisms for the adsorption of metals are chelation, complexing, and ionic interchange (Fu & Wang, 2011). The advantage with these biosorbents is the fact that they do not have to be produced specifically for that purpose, since they are agricultural or timber byproducts, available in large quantities (Sulyman et al, 2017), additionally they are low-cost and easily processed.…”

“…Do najbardziej skutecznych należą węgle aktywne. Ze względu na ich cenę wciąż poszukuje się tańszych materiałów sorpcyjnych określanych nazwą low-cost adsorbents [1][2][3]. Jednym z dość dawno rozpatrywanych rodzajów tego typu adsorbentów są popioły lotne ze spalania paliw w zakładach energetycznych (elektrowniach, elektrociepłowniach) [1].…”

“…This ability is to a great extent due to their auxiliary properties in addition to the spongy nature which gives them a vast surface area, as well as easily modified compound nature via different chemical treatment . The primary sources of carbon are naturally available materials such as wood, coal, coconut shell as well as several other carbonaceous materials . Agricultural and industrial wastes are the most prominent precursor employed in the preparation of activated carbon due to their low cost and abundant availability …”
