The Evolution of Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling

The fifty-year progress of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is surveyed. FTN signaling exploits non-orthogonal dense symbol packing in the time domain for the sake of increasing the data rate attained. After reviewing the system models of both the conventional Nyquist-based and FTN signaling transceivers, we survey the evolution of FTN techniques, including their low-complexity detection and channel estimation. Furthermore, in addition to the classic FTN signaling philosophy, we introduce the recent frequency-domain filtering and precoding aided schemes. When relying on precoding, the information rate of FTN signaling becomes related to the eigenvalues of an FTN-specific intersymbol interference matrix, which provides a unified framework for the associated information-theoretic analysis and simplifies the associated power allocation specifically designed for increasing the information rate attained. We show that the FTN signaling scheme combined with bespoke power allocation employing a realistic raised-cosine shaping filter achieves the Shannon capacity associated with ideal rectangular shaping filters.

This paper first investigates the effects of interframe interference (IFI) on the recent eigendecompositionprecoded (EVD) non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) transmission scheme, where subcarrier spacing is set smaller than that of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). More specifically, the system model of EVD-NOFDM is generalized to support multi-frame transmission, and we propose an optimal power allocation for the multi-frame EVD-NOFDM architecture. The NOFDM scheme's information rate bound is derived and evaluated by our theoretical analysis by assuming the presence of IFI, whereas most previous NOFDM studies ignored IFI effects. Our performance results demonstrate that the proposed multi-frame NOFDM scheme eliminates the detrimental IFI effects while attaining its specific benefits of bandwidth efficiency.

Compared to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) provides higher spectrum efficiency, which has been regarded as a promising waveform for future wireless communications. Against this background, the design of SEFDM receiver is investigated in this paper, considering its sampling frequency synchronization (SFS), timing synchronization, phase recovery, and detector design. Specifically, a two-step SFS module, which consists of a coarse sampling frequency offset (SFO) compensation and a frequency domain zero-forcing based fine estimation, is proposed first. Next, a low-complexity timing synchronization scheme is designed to avoid excessive multipliers and look-up-tables. Furthermore, an SFO-based phase recovery is proposed, which shares the compensation and SFO estimation with SFS module, thus further reducing the complexity of SEFDM receiver. Finally, TSVD-FSD based detector has been studied to efficiently eliminate intercarrier interference. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed SEFDM receiver, where the transmission rate can be improved by 25% at a loss of only 0.7dB bit error ratio compared to OFDM.
