Background. Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and significant health consequences to the newborn, families, and communities and tens of emotional and economic costs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of singleton preterm birth and associated factors in Shire Suhul General Hospital, Northern Ethiopia. Methods. Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among systematically selected 325 postnatal mothers in Shire Suhul General Hospital, Northern Ethiopia, from January to March 2018. The data were collected through both face-to-face interview and chart review by using pretested semistructured questionnaires. SPSS version 20 was employed to enter and analyze the data. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were run to identify factors associated with singleton preterm birth at the level of P values ≤ 0.25 and <0.05 for each model, respectively. Result. The magnitude of singleton preterm birth in Suhul Hospital was 16.9%. Smoking cigarette/drinking alcohol during pregnancy [AOR=3.61: CI 95%; 1.59-8.23], previous abortion [AOR=2.37: CI 95%; 1.15-4.88], hemoglobin level < 11gm/dl [AOR=2.44: CI 95%; 1.14-5.22], visible physical neonatal congenital anomaly [AOR=10.42: CI 95%; 1.66-65.23] , and history of giving low birth weight baby [AOR: 2.78 CI 95%; 1.39-5.55] were the factors statistically associated with singleton preterm birth. Conclusion. The magnitude of preterm birth in this study was higher than the average prevalence of preterm birth reported in Ethiopia. Smoking cigarette/drinking alcohol during pregnancy, mothers who had previous abortion, low maternal hemoglobin level, presence of visible physical congenital anomalies of newborn baby, and history of bearing low birth weight baby were found to have statistically significant association with singleton preterm birth. Supplement of daily iron with folic acid (folic acid ideally before pregnancy) for all pregnant mothers with good adherence monitoring and giving attention to preconceptional health care service to avoid any cigarette smoking/alcohol drinking and risk detection were set as recommendations.

Background: Low birth weight is a socio, economic, cultural and community based health issue which reflects responsibility and commitment of local and national administrative authorities. It continues to be a cause of short and long term adverse perinatal outcome with a bearing on adult non communicable health risks.Methods: This is a prospective observational and analytic study to know the prevalence, risk factors and perinatal outcome of LBW, from July 2017 to December 2018 in department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, MIMS Medical College, Andhra Pradesh, India. Maternal risk factors and outcomes associated with LBW were defined through risk ratios.Results: 721 infants including 116 LBW and 605 NBW born during study period were included in the study. Prevalence of LBW was 16%. Preterm birth accounted for 35%, FGR for 13.8% and SGA for 51.2% of them. Maternal factors like age <20 years and >35years, social status II to IV, below higher secondary education, house maker, primi gravida, grand multi para, BMI <18.5kg/M2 or >24.9kg/M2, Hb<11 gm% were having higher RR for LBW. LBW infants showed frequent association with oligo or polyhydramnious and hemorrhagic or turbid amniotic fluid. They had higher risks for non reassuring fetal heart rate changes, for induced delivery or an elective caesarean section. More often they needed NICU care for longer duration and showed a higher risk for malformations and neonatal mortality. Overall perinatal mortality was 5.54 per 1000 live birth.Conclusions: LBW is a risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality; which can be minimised by institutional delivery. High prevalence PTB (35%) warrants obstetricians to be more vigilant about indentifying the risk factors and adequate management planning. Constitutionally small baby at birth probably needs redefining normal birth weight for different ethnicity.

Introducción: El peso al nacer es un importante indicador de salud del recién nacido, de la madre y de las condiciones de salubridad de una sociedad; además es reconocido como la principal causa de morbimortalidad en la infancia. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre seguridad alimentaria en el hogar durante el último trimestre del embarazo y el bajo peso al nacer. Materiales y métodos: Estudio de casos y controles; se incluyeron 73 recién nacidos a término con bajo peso y 73 neonatos con peso normal. Se analizaron variables demográficas, clínicas y de seguridad alimentaria. Resultados: El bajo peso al nacer se asoció con la inseguridad alimentaria en el hogar (OR: 19,3; IC 95%: 6,5-56,9), ajustando por hipertensión arterial de la madre, vaginosis, antecedente de ruptura prematura de membranas y malnutrición gestacional por exceso. Conclusiones: Se encontró una asociación importante entre la inseguridad alimentaria en el hogar durante el último trimestre de gestación y el bajo peso al nacer de los neonatos atendidos en el hospital San Pedro de Pasto. La fuerza de la asociación podría subestimarse en ausencia de ajuste por variables clínicas y demográficas.
