Low-altitude atmospheric wind measurement from the combined Mie and Rayleigh backscattering by Doppler lidar with an iodine filter

Abstract: This paper briefly discusses the mobile ground-based incoherent Doppler wind lidar system, with iodine filters as receiving frequency discriminators, developed by the Ocean Remote Sensing Laboratory, Ocean University of Qingdao, China. The presented result of wind profiles in October and November 2000, retrieved from the combined Mie and Rayleigh backscattering, is the first report to our knowledge of wind measurements in the troposphere by such a system, where the required independent measurement of aerosol-s… Show more

“…2. A similar technique was successfully applied to a tropospheric lidar system (Liu et al, 1997(Liu et al, , 2002. The Doppler shift for 1 m/s wind speed is about 4 MHz ( λ ∼ 4 pm) at a wavelength of λ = 532.260 nm or λ/λ∼10 −8 .…”

“…The pulse laser transmitter of our mobile Doppler wind LIDAR is excited by a dual wavelength seed injection laser and provides a tunable single longitudinal mode with the required frequency stability [15]. The stability of the laser frequency is obtained by locking the second harmonic of the seeded laser to the mid-point of a wing of Iodine absorption line no.…”

“…The aerosol concentration can change due to wind shear and evaporationcondensation processes (Ivlev and Dovgalyuk, 1999). For example, small clouds with horizontal characteristic scales of about 1 km can be displaced completely out of their originally occupied volume in 40-200 s by wind with a speed within the range of 5-25 m s −1 (Liu et al, 2002). Clouds could be split up into numerous small clusters at the horizontal scale of one or several kilometers.…”
