Show more

“…The river prawn Macrobrachium americanum (Spence‐Bate, 1868) is a large freshwater caridean species with high commercial aquaculture potential (García‐Guerrero, Becerril‐Morales, Vega‐Villasante, & Espinosa‐Chaurand, ; Méndez‐Martínez et al, ; New & Nair, ). River prawn is locally marketed in Guatemala, El Salvador (Díaz‐Monge, Díaz‐Montt, & Rodríguez‐Ruíz, ) and in several regions of the Pacific coast of Mexico.…”

“…River prawn is locally marketed in Guatemala, El Salvador (Díaz‐Monge, Díaz‐Montt, & Rodríguez‐Ruíz, ) and in several regions of the Pacific coast of Mexico. In Mexico, local fishermen sell their prawns to hotels and restaurants to be offered to guests and diners (García‐Guerrero & Apún‐Molina, ; García‐Guerrero et al, ; Pérez‐Velázquez, Hernández‐Ventura, Ulloa‐Ramírez, Patiño‐Valencia, & Tovar‐Ávila, ). However, no records exist of yearly harvest amounts or of the economic value generated by this activity in Latin America due to the lack of a formal market.…”

“…The culture of M. acanthurus has been suggested as an alternative to fisheries (YamasakiGranados et al, 2012). However, there is scarce information on the reproduction conditions (García-Guerrero et al, 2013) that might allow the development of an efficient and economically feasible production of this species. The nutritional requirements for the reproductive stage have not yet reported and just Villafuerte et al (2016) found that females of M. acanthurus fed on diets with inclusion of krill meal and oil (protein and lipid sources, respectively), matured faster and reduce their growth performances than females fed on fish meal and oil.…”

“…More than a hundred Macrobrachium spp. have been described, many of which demonstrate high culture potential (García-Guerrero et al, 2013). Research related to the Macrobrachium genus consolidates during the late 2000s, but specialized journals have been collecting scientific articles on the subject since the mid-1980s (Chong-Carrillo et al, 2015).…”
