Microfinance institutions play essential roles in poverty reduction in Indonesia. However, its practices are often insensitive to local values. Using postcolonial theories, this article explores how Sundanese (an Indigenous ethnic group native to the western region of Java, Indonesia) in the Subang district of the Sunda Region of West Java, Indonesia, utilize gintingan (an Indigenous economic system based on the rice trade) as an Indigenous microfinance practice, to fulfill their significant needs. This research adopts an ethnography approach conducted in four rural villages from 2011 to 2019. Information was gathered mainly through participatory observation and informal interviews with villagers. The analysis yields that people use gintingan to preserve their cultural practices, such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation). The findings suggest how gintingan becomes a space for the people to challenge conventional microfinance institutions. The research invites policymakers to rethink a culturally sensitive and decolonized approach to eradicating economic problems in rural areas.

Agama dan kepercayaan lokal di Indonesia bukan sekadar elemen budaya, melainkan pilar yang menguatkan jalinan sosial di tengah masyarakat. Meskipun dinamika sosial telah mengubah wajahnya, keberadaannya tetap kental dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Namun, ragam keyakinan ini bukan tanpa tantangan. Meski dijamin oleh konstitusi, harmoni antar umat beragama masih rawan terganggu oleh berbagai faktor. Perbedaan dalam keyakinan dan penafsiran agama, ditambah kurangnya toleransi, menjadi bahan bakar konflik yang tak jarang memicu ketegangan. Di Kabupaten Garut, studi kasus menyoroti kesulitan dalam memberikan pendidikan kepercayaan kepada penganut kepercayaan Sunda Wiwitan Madrais. Meski upaya telah dilakukan dengan kebijakan seperti Permendikbud No. 27 Tahun 2016, implementasinya masih menemui kendala. Untuk memastikan hak-hak mereka terpenuhi, diperlukan kolaborasi antara pemerintah, lembaga pendidikan, dan komunitas adat, dengan fokus pada penyempurnaan kurikulum, kerja sama lintas lembaga, dan dialog yang berkelanjutan. Melalui upaya bersama, diharapkan lingkungan pendidikan yang inklusif dan menghormati keberagaman keyakinan dapat terwujud di Indonesia.

The purpose of this study is to determine the construction of the meaning of Sunda Wiwitan religion in Sundanese Baduy indigenous people. The research uses interpretive paradigms with qualitative methods, and symbolic interaction study approaches as a tool of analysis. Data gathered through participatory observation and in-depth interviews. Sunda Wiwitan religion is the main symbol in the Baduy indigenous people, and is a dimension that reaches every side of life, and is a collective representation of the belief system of the Baduy indigenous community. This symbol serves as a reference for the collective paradigm, and as a reference for interpreting natural phenomena and determining the behavior of the Baduy indigenous people. The symbol of traditional institutions and traditional ceremonies represent three essential issues, namely: (1) Understanding and appreciation of religion (belief) of the Baduy indigenous people as Sunda Wiwitan descendants; (2) Observance and practice of the daily life of the Baduy indigenous people as members of the traditional Sundanese or Sunda Buhun social groups; and (3) Symbolization of the existence and recognition of the existence of government and power outside the Baduy Customary institution.
