LoRa can be used as the communication technology for the intelligent monitoring system. However, LoRa is usually used for outdoor communication. The usage of LoRa as indoor communication has many challenges. One of the challenges is that collision happens when using standard LoRa devices with only one channel. The algorithms based on TDMA (Time-division Multiple Access) and CSMA (Carrier-sense Multiple Access) protocols can be used to address this challenge. These two algorithms can be modified by applying the device that is the center of the network (gateway) as a central control and the data transmitter (sensor node) as a passive device. The test was conducted on the Intelligent Laboratory Monitoring System to evaluate this design on a multi-node LoRa network. RSSI testing proves that the distance and building interference affect the signal strength or RSSI of sensor nodes, so the average RSSI value is -73.75 with an RSSI threshold of value -106. The gateway successfully collected each sensor node data with an average success of about 64.953%. The experiment results show the success rate of the CSMA-based algorithm is 10% versus 100% in TDMA-based algorithm; the delay is 4125 ms for CSMA-based and 428.3 ms for TDMA-based. This result means that the CSMA-based algorithm is more complex, takes more time to process the data than the TDMA-based algorithm, has a low success rate, and is more prone to collisions.

In developing nations, outdated technologies and sulfur-rich heavy fossil fuel usage are major contributors to air pollution, affecting urban air quality and public health. In addition, the limited resources hinder the adoption of advanced monitoring systems crucial for informed public health policies. This study addresses this challenge by introducing an affordable internet of things (IoT) monitoring system capable of tracking atmospheric pollutants and meteorological parameters. The IoT platform combines a Bresser 5-in-1 weather station with a previously developed air quality monitoring device equipped with Alphasense gas sensors. Utilizing MQTT, Node-RED, InfluxDB, and Grafana, a Raspberry Pi collects, processes, and visualizes the data it receives from the measuring device by LoRa. To validate system performance, a 15-day field campaign was conducted in Santa Clara, Cuba, using a Libelium Smart Environment Pro as a reference. The system, with a development cost several times lower than Libelium and measuring a greater number of variables, provided reliable data to address air quality issues and support health-related decision making, overcoming resource and budget constraints. The results showed that the IoT architecture has the capacity to process measurements in tropical conditions. The meteorological data provide deeper insights into events of poorer air quality.

Internet of things (IoT) phenomenon has brought up distinctive technologies that are using wireless communication and appearing in smart city applications. Long range (LoRa) modulation technique has pulled up the market and forced the announcement of LoRa wide area network (LoRaWAN) standard in 2021 by ITU-T with Y.4480 standard code. LoRaWAN is a medium access control protocol using low power wide area network approaches with the aim of long-range coverage and management of many edge devices. LoRaWAN networks are emerging all over the world with some existing optimization, planning and network allocation problems that need to be overcome. This paper focuses on comparative analysis and interpretation of measurements performed in a LoRaWAN network deployed in an 18-floor building with a LoRaWAN gateway on the roof. The research covers results of comparative measurements between end device and Adeunis field test device (AFTD) for received signal strength indicator (RSSI), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spreading factor (SF). End devices have been randomly selected from 18 th , 12 th , 6 th and 1 st floors and their daily performance data have been gathered through the network server. AFTD has been used to get 10 sample measurements for each floor in the same day. Minimum RSSI values measured by end devices are better than the ones measured with AFTD except the case in 1 st floor. All SNR values measured with end devices are better than measurements performed with AFTD. SF measurements show that SF differs with increasing distances from 7 to 12 in order as expected with theoretical computations.
