Loose coupling approach for UMTS/WiMAX integration

Abstract: Fourth generation (4G) Network integrates existing wireless technologies (GPRS/UMTS, WiMAX, WLAN, etc.) and offers access to services while on the move, at any place and any time. A multi-interface device can switch connection among available access points implementing different technologies. Integration of heterogeneous wireless networks can be performed at different levels (open coupling and tight coupling.). This paper presents a loose coupling approach to interconnect UMTS and WIMAX systems.

“…The GGSN based integration mechanism has been widely studied and suggested by several researchers in the literature (Tsao and Lin, 2002a;Benoubira et al, 2011;Varma et al, 2003;Altwelib et al, 2007;Altwelib and Ashibani, 2005;Tsao and Lin, 2002b;Buddhikot et al, 2003). When GGSN is the integration point, SGSNE or gateway is required to perform the internetworking.…”

“…Loose coupling Approach for UMTS/WiMAX Integration by adaptive modulation technique in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. Base stations of WiMAX can provide communication without the need of line-of-sight (LOS) connection [5]. Interworked WiMAX-3G Cellular Data Networks architecture for Mobility Management and Performance Evaluation by interworking environment and the service exibiity that this technology offers to the currently deployed wireless broadband technologies makes it appealing to users, service developers and network operators [6].…”

“…UMTS is build by using complex technologies like CDMA, ATM, IP etc. The transmission of data packets to the users in UMTS is done by using GGSN, SGSN, RNC and Node B [5]. The rest of the paper is organized as follows: In section II, we described the related work.…”
