Nurse training programmes commenced in Saudi Arabia in the late 1950s, around the time of the birth of enterostomal therapy internationally. Although stoma care emerged as the first nursing specialty in the late 1980s, in Saudi Arabia, the first nurses graduated as enterostomal therapists only in 2010. Since the 1970s, western nurse executives have influenced models of care in Saudi hospitals. Both North American and British models are evident today, including enterostomal therapy models, such as wound, ostomy, and continence nursing and stoma therapy nursing. In order to meet the needs of these vulnerable patient populations, it may be necessary to standardise a model of education in Saudi Arabia. This article is an overview of enterostomal therapy in Saudi Arabia and provides insight into some of the challenges encountered.
