Look Who's Lurking

Abstract: Cyber psychological abuse and social media surveillance of ex-partners are relatively common virtual forms of behavior linked with intimate partner violence (Pineda, Galán, Martínez-Martínez, Campagne, & Piqueras, 2021) as well as on-going and dangerous intimate partner stalking (Logan & Langhinrichsen-Rohling, 2021). While both forms of behavior are concerning, especially after the dissolution of a romantic relationship, transdiagnostic shared and unique predictors of each are relatively unknown. In t… Show more

“…Emerging research has provided empirical support for the role of intolerance of uncertainty as the primary mechanism through which attachment anxiety leads to increased reassurance seeking (Clark et al, 2020). Greater intolerance of uncertainty has also been shown to be predictive of both SMS and CDA in the presence of emotion regulation difficulties (McMillan et al, 2022).…”

“…It is also a time when many experience at least one intimate relationship break-up (Leadbeater et al, 2018; Rhoades et al, 2011). Relationship dissolution can be difficult to navigate; studies indicate higher rates of maladaptive coping, unwanted relationship pursuit, and dating abuse after break-ups among emerging adults (Dank et al, 2013; McMillan et al, 2022; Mahoney et al, 2022; Shorey et al, 2018). In recent years, the increasing popularity of social networking sites has led many of these “bad break-up behaviors” to shift to an online format [e.g., technology-facilitated intimate partner violence, or technology-related intimate partner violence (T-IPV; Ronzón-Tirado et al, 2021)].…”

“…While T-IPV definitions have been evolving (Vivian et al, 2004), cyber dating abuse (CDA) has been conceptualized as a distinct form of T-IPV that includes both surveillance behaviors and psychological abuse and is thought to be motivated by the desire to control or monitor a current or ex-intimate partner (Burke et al, 2011). Although CDA can occur during any point of a romantic relationship, the period following a romantic break-up may pose a particular risk (Langhinrichsen-Rohling et al, 2000; McMillan et al, 2022). Therefore, CDA perpetrated toward an ex-partner after a difficult break-up is the focus of the current study.…”
