Look-Ahead Energy Management of a Grid-Connected Residential PV System with Energy Storage under Time-Based Rate Programs

Abstract: This paper presents look-ahead energy management system for a grid-connected residential photovoltaic (PV) system with battery under critical peak pricing for electricity, enabling effective and proactive participation of consumers in the Smart Grid's demand response. In the proposed system, the PV is the primary energy source with the battery for storing (or retrieving) excessive (or stored) energy to pursue the lowest possible electricity bill but it is grid-tied to secure electric power delivery. “…Therefore, a dc/dc converter with voltage regulation is used to connect with PV power systems in parallel to keep the output voltage in the desired constant dc voltage range, as shown in Figure 1. In Figure 1, the dc bus voltage can supply a dc/ac inverter for a grid-connected power system [1][2][3][4][5], a dc/dc converter for dc load [6][7][8][9][10], and so on. The dc/ac inverter and dc/dc converter are regarded as dc loads.…”

“…Here, the objective function of our optimization problem is the minimization of the electricity bill as given by Equation (18). It illustrates that the electricity bill depends on two factors: amount of scheduled load and electricity price in a particular time slot.…”

“…However, the authors did not consider the UC and ESS integration. The authors in [18], discuss the scheduling of home appliances for designed objective of electricity cost minimization or optimization of electricity consumption pattern. MILP is used to schedule the household appliances and the RES.…”

“…There have been several studies related to smart grid. Yoo et al [8] presented look-ahead energy management system for a grid-connected residential photovoltaic system with battery under critical peak pricing for electricity, enabling effective and proactive participation of consumers in the smart grid's demand response. In their proposed system, the photovoltaic system is the primary energy source with the battery for storing (or retrieving) excessive (or stored) energy to pursue the lowest possible electricity bill.…”

“…Constraints Equation (8) corresponds to the constraint of energy demand and supply conservation as described in Equation (4). Equations (9)-(13) jointly represent the constraints on the energy demand required by air conditioning activity in such a way to guarantee that must be true for at least one .…”
