Longterm Survival and Associated Risk Factors in Patients with Adult-onset Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies and Amyopathic Dermatomyositis: Experience in a Single Institute in Japan

“…Later work have confirmed this, but shown large variation in mortality rates, probably due to differences in patient selection, classification, loss to follow-up and treatment-related issues [4,5]. Peter and Bohan criteria were applied in eight studies on mortality [3,4,[24][25][26][27][28][29] but only one of them assessed an unselected population-based cohort [3]. This study, which is the largest mortality study to date, identified 248 PM/DM cases diagnosed in Finland from 1969 to 1985 through hospital discharge searches and subsequent case assignment by chart review.…”

“…1,25 Evidence for an association between PM/DM and solid tumors came first from case reports, with the reported rate of cancer varying from 6% to 60%. 1,12,23,[26][27][28][29][30] Lab investigation shows raised muscle enzymecreatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aldolase, and aminotransferases; and serological test can be ANA positive, Anti Jo positive. Autoantibodies are found in a majority of patients.…”

“…In addition to cardiovascular, 24,25 infectious, [31][32][33] and pulmonary events, the following factors are associated with the increased mortality in DM: thrombocytopenia; 34 diabetes mellitus; 34 neoplasm; 10,34 advanced age; 34 creatine kinase levels; 35 and interstitial pulmonary disease. 35 The percentage of deaths ranges from 7.8% to 28%.…”

“…35 The percentage of deaths ranges from 7.8% to 28%. 10,[34][35][36] During follow-up, death occurred in 11.5% of the patients, an index lower than that of Chinese 34 (28,6%) and Japanese 35 (26.9%) studies, and slightly greater than the statistics of Taiwan (7.68%). 36 In our case series, sepsis was the major cause of death, followed by neoplasms, and involvement of the respiratory tract and cardiovascular system, as reported in other studies.…”
