Longstanding symptomatic choroidal hemangioma managed with limited PDT as initial or salvage therapy

Abstract: The present series demonstrates that even limited, low-irradiance, single-spot photodynamic therapy with verteporfin is an effective first-line treatment for choroidal hemangiomas.

“…[46] There have been numerous case series describing patients with circumscribed choroidal hemangioma in which the majority of subjects received one PDT treatment. [46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54] In two case series, the vast majority of patients required more than one PDT treatment because the treatment goal was complete resolution of the tumor, not just resolution of subretinal and intraretinal fluid. [50,51] Considering several case series on PDT for choroidal hemangioma, the baseline tumor thickness ranged from 2.6 to 3.8 mm.…”

“…All patients displayed tumor regression to some extent, and 7-100% had complete tumor resolution. [46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54] More sessions of PDT may increase the risk of choroidal atrophy and neurosensory retinal degeneration. [51] Visual acuity improvement has been shown to be inversely associated with the number of PDT sessions.…”

“…Recently, treatment of CCH using photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been reported by several groups with overall favorable outcome [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14]. Based on these reports it is apparent that in comparison to other treatment modalities, PDT has the advantages of a low complication rate, a higher chance of a favorable visual outcome, low risk of recurrence, and lower treatment-associated morbidity.…”

“…An improvement in VA was observed in all the cases, in 4 cases VA returned to 20/20, as well as disappearance of subretinal or intraretinal fluid. Verbraak et al [12] described the efficacy of limited, low-irradiance, single-spot PDT for the treatment of symptomatic choroidal hemangiomas in 13 consecutive patients.…”
