Longitudinal study using a diode phantom for helical tomotherapy IMRT QA

Abstract: The phantom measurements closely match the planned dose distributions in high and low dose-gradient regions. In addition, a significant positive statistical correlation was determined between the IMRT QA, daily QA, and rotational variation output measurements. Together, these results signify high degree of accuracy of both the DELTA4 phantom as well as the TomoTherapy Hi-Art system.

“…After the calculation of the dose distribution in the phantom, point 40 reported the use of an ionization chamber array for the dosimetric verification of tomotherapy plans. The use of a device that incorporates two orthogonal diode arrays for tomotherapy IMRT QA is reported by Guerts et al 41 It should be understood that the DQA plan verification does not test all aspects of the calculated treatment plan in the patient anatomy. For example, an incorrect mass density table could be applied during the patient plan calculation.…”

“…The current method for performing patient DQA tests for tomotherapy at our institution is with the Delta 4 and therefore served as a standard for the PTW Seven29/Octavius device as well as film and ion chamber measurements using the cheese phantom that is the historical gold standard for tomotherapy. [91516] Plans were evaluated using the gamma index planar dose distribution and dose profile comparison.…”

“…[811] Diode and ion chamber arrays in conjunction with selected phantoms have also been shown to significantly reduce the time necessary to complete a patient QA when compared to film and ion chamber measurement. [89] One such diode array phantom is the ScandiDos Delta 4 which has been proven to be an accurate means of validating patient plans. [9]…”

“…Another method for normalization of film dose was described by Thomas (Thomas et al, 2005a), which can be implemented as long ionisation chamber readings shows acceptable deviations in homogeneous regions. For arrays, one could use acceptance criteria from the following references (Geurts et al, 2009;Jursinic et al, 2010;Van Esch et al, 2007;Xu et al, 2010).…”
