Longitudinal study on reciprocity between personality traits and parenting stress

Abstract: Reciprocal associations between the Big Five personality traits and parenting stress -including both parents' feelings of their distress and perception of their incompetence as parents -were studied with 248 participants (49% of which were males). Longitudinal data, collected at ages 33/36, 42, and 50, were used. Cross-lagged path analysis revealed that in case of both mothers and fathers, neuroticism at age 33 predicted high parenting stress and extraversion at age 33 low parenting stress at age 42. “…In contrast, as predicted, extraversion and conscientiousness were related to lower levels of caregiver burden. These results are consistent with prior studies relating both traits to better physical and mental outcomes in caregivers of children with DD (Jobe & Glidden, 2008;Yamada et al, 2012) and in dementia caregivers (Melo et al, 2011), and relating extraversion to lower parenting stress in the general population (Rantanen et al, 2015). This suggests that being open to and seeking social connections as well as being prudent, dependable, well organized, and persistent in dealing with concerns could alleviate the burden of caring for someone with ASD.…”

“…Additionally, the findings suggest that there is a period in life around age 40 when parenting content is more meaningful than earlier or later and when parenting identity is thus more interconnected with general well-being. Associations between personality traits and parenting stress have also been detected to be most significant at around age 40 (Rantanen, Tillemann, Metsäpelto, Kokko, & Pulkkinen, 2015). Identity consists of several domains of which parenting is only one, and the focus of identity commitment and interest may change over the life course (Marcia, 1993).…”
