Longitudinal study of blood pressure during the 1st year of life

Abstract: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), heart rate and weight were measured in 260 boys and 254 girls, from birth to 12 months of age. Mean +/- SD values of parameters studied and percentile curves are reported. Systolic and diastolic BP increase significantly during the first 6 months of life and are poorly correlated with weight. In the 1st month of life the diastolic BP values are lower than those reported by others.

“…We documented the available mean ET-CO 2 and MAP values of each time epoch. Because normal MAP differs with age, we used published normative values for each patient according to his or her age at surgery (14). Each MAP value was categorized as normal, elevated (Ͼ1 SD or Ͼ2 SD above the mean), or decreased (Ͻ1 SD or 2 SD below the mean).…”

“…This peak is not an artefact of the modelling method, but can be observed in the primary data from a number of studies that report multiple measurements on infants under one year of age. [20][21][22][23][24][25] The median heart rate in this age range increases from 127 beats/minute at birth, reaching a maximum of 145 beats/minute at approximately one month of age, before decreasing to 113 beats/minute by two years of age.…”

“…Although there is no report on BP measured strictly under the same conditions as the present study, we estimated arm BP from previous works in which 4852 newborns with BP measured on day 1-6 by oscillometric devices were studied in the United States, Italy, Australia, and Nigeria [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The simple average SBP from these previous works was 71.3 mmHg (range: 62.6-76 mmHg) [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
