Longitudinal quantitative radiodensitometric study of treated and untreated lower molar furcation involvements

Abstract: 38 first or second lower molars from 16 patients showing furcation involvements of degrees 1 and 2 were treated after motivation and hygiene instruction, either by subgingival curettage, or by the modified Widman surgical procedure or by furcation plasty. The plaque index, the gingival index of inflammation and the depth of interproximal and interradicular pockets were recorded before and up to 1 year after the 3 therapeutical procedures. The above clinical indices were also followed for 2 years in 15 lower mo… Show more

“…In contrast with previous studies 13,18,22 , in the present investigation, there were no instances of epithelial downgrowth in all sites. In similar defects, Andrade, et al 1 (2007) observed a correlation between the exposure of the membrane and the epithelial migration.…”

“…It is recognized that teeth with furcation involvement may undergo a more extensive and rapid clinical probing attachment loss and are lost with greater frequency than single-rooted teeth 18 . Although regeneration of periodontal tissue is the ultimate goal of periodontal therapy, regeneration is not a predictable healing outcome after conventional treatment.…”

“…These results are in accordance with previous reports of Payot et al (1987a & b). In patients where furcation involved first lower molars were treated by means of a modified Widman flap procedure, loss of density was still detected in the furcation area after six months.…”

“…3-4 weeks after gingivectomy or full thickness Haps, the maximum decrease in radioopacity was observed (Bergstrom & Henrikson 1974). Analyzing standardized radiographs by means of densitometry, the lowest densities were measured in the superficial furcation areas 2 months after treatment of furcation involvements (Payot et al 1987a & b).…”
