Longitudinal Qualitative Methods in Health Behavior and Nursing Research: Assumptions, Design, Analysis and Lessons Learned

Abstract: Longitudinal qualitative research (LQR) is an emerging methodology in health behavior and nursing research. Researchers are turning to LQR to understand experiences across time as well as identify facilitators and inhibitors of health/illness behaviors and transitions. Currently, a lack of information exists to guide researchers on LQR techniques and considerations. Our objective was to provide a methodological resource for health behavior and nursing researchers conducting LQR. LQR may be applied to understan… Show more

“…The separate interviews on two different dates enabled us to capture a change in perspective over time, which was achievable using the longitudinal qualitative research approach. This approach provides the possibility to capture experiences of individuals and groups in a more holistic way and allows for in-depth comprehension beyond a cross-sectional point in time [ 32 , 33 ]. A total of 26 interviews were conducted, where 13 participants were interviewed both before and after a 30-day app trial period using separate interview guides.…”

“…Qualitative longitudinal research is particularly useful in contributing to trial development, evaluation and implementation granting possibilities to investigate changes and processes. 24 , 25 Individual interviews were performed with participants from the intervention group at baseline and after the 12-week intervention. All participants in the intervention group was asked to participate in individual interviews, 11 healthcare professionals accepted an interview at both baseline and the 12 months follow up.…”

“…The qualitative data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis 27 in a diachronic manner (all data were analyzed after the data collection was completed). 25 First, transcripts were read through and the interview text was divided into three domains: 1) feasibility of the digital COPD education program, 2) knowledge and experience, and 3) working procedures. The three domains were then analyzed separately, the text associated with each domain was divided in meaning units and coded.…”

“…Through these cross-sectional thematic analyses, the central theme and its sub-themes from each timepoint were established. Using the framework analysis approach [ 30 , 31 ], we then conducted a longitudinal analysis investigating changes in the central theme across time within individuals and among the group. A data matrix was created for each participant where sub-themes were rows and the timepoints were columns (see Table 1 for an example).…”
