Introdution: The occlusal surface of the molars are more susceptible to dental caries because of their anatomy, so in some cases, the sealants are indicated. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, retention, presence of caries and marginal discoloration of resinous sealants (Fluoroshield and Prevent) in first permanent molars. Methods: Ninety - one children aged 7 to 9 years were selected from a municipal institution Regente Feijó, SP, Brazil, for the application of resinous sealants to first permanent lower first molars. The application of Fluoroshield and Prevent resin sealants was performed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The evaluation was performed after 6 and 12 months by double-blind examiners and followed the criteria: alpha (total sealant, absence of caries and absence of pigmentation) charlie (partial sealing, superficial caries and light pigmentation) charlie complete sealing, presence of cavitation and pigmentation) after 12 months of application by two previously calibrated examiners. Results: Using Fischer's exact test, no significant difference (p 0.05) was observed between the resin-based sealant groups. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the enamel microhardness, surface roughness, and chemical composition after microabrasion technique, followed by polishing and different immersion times in artificial saliva. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety enamel blocks (25 mm2) from bovine incisors were divided into two groups (G1 and G2), and then subdivided in five subgroups (n = 9) according to their microabrasion treatment and polishing with a diamond paste: 35% phosphoric acid and pumice (H3PO4+Pum) and polishing; just H3PO4+Pum; 6.6% hydrochloric acid and silica (HCl+Sil) and polishing; just HCl+Sil; and control (no treatment). For G1, roughness and microhardness analyses were performed before (L1) and after (L2) microabrasion. After 15 (L3) and 30 (L4) days of immersion in artificial saliva, microhardness analysis was also performed. After (L4) analysis, the specimens were subjected to SEM analysis. G2 was used for the chemical analysis using energy dispersion testing (EDS). The data was subjected to statistical analysis (α = 5%). For roughness, L2 presented higher values than L1, except for the polished groups. For microhardness, L2 presented higher values than L1, except for unpolished groups. The L3 and L4 did not differ and were higher than L1. RESULTS: No changes were observed in the phosphorus concentrations of the microabrasioned enamel. However, the specimens treated with HCl+Sil were observed as having decreased calcium and increased chlorine and silica on the EDS test. CONCLUSION: Microabrasion followed by polishing and immersion in artificial saliva for 15 days is enough to increase the microhardness of microabrasioned enamel surfaces, although the microabrasion procedure can alter the mineral content of the enamel.

Retention of a Pit-and-Fissure Sealant: Comparison of Three Types of IsolationObjective: To compare in vivo the retention of a pit-and-fissure sealant using 3 types of isolation: rubber dam isolation, latex glove isolation, and relative isolation with cotton rolls. Method:The sample consisted of 180 healthy premolars from 60 adolescents aged 14 to 16 years. Three groups of 60 teeth each were formed, according to the type of isolation. Prior to sealant placement, all teeth were conditioned with 37% phosphoric acid for 60 seconds. In each group, the teeth were evaluated after 90 and 180 days by a duly calibrated examiner, following the criteria proposed by Tonn and Ryge (1982): RT = total retention of sealant; PP = partial retention of sealant; and PT = total loss of sealant. The results were statistically analyzed by the non-parametric KruskalWallis test at a 5% significance level. The Wilcoxon test was also used to compare the sealant retention among the teeth in the same group, after 90 and 180 days.Results: There was no statistically significant difference among the groups for the 90-day (p>0.83) and 180-day (p>0.78) evaluations assessments. Comparisons of teeth in the same group at 90 and 180 days did not reveal a statistically significant difference either. Conclusion: Sealant retention was similar for the 3 types of isolation. Objetivo:Comparar in vivo a retenção de um selante de fóssulas e fissuras sob três tipos de isolamento: absoluto com dique de borracha e com luva de procedimento e o isolamento relativo com roletes de algodão. Método: A amostra foi composta por cento e oitenta (n=180) dentes, pré-molares hígidos, de 60 adolescentes pertencentes à faixa etária de 14 a 16 anos. Foram formados 3 grupos de estudo com 60 dentes cada,de acordo com o isolamento realizado. Previamente ao selamento, todos os dentes receberam a aplicação do condicionamento com ácido fosfórico a 37%, pelo tempo de 60 segundos. Os dentes de cada grupo foram avaliados, após 90 e 180 dias, por um examinador devidamente calibrado, segundo os critérios sugeridos por Tonn e Ryge (1982): RT -selante com retenção total; PP -selante com perda parcial; PT -selante com perda total. Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos à análise estatística, empregando teste não-paramétrico de Kruskal Wallis, com nível de significância 5%. Foi empregado também o teste de Wilcoxon para comparar a retenção do selante em dentes do mesmo grupo, em 90 e 180 dias. Resultados: Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos de estudo, para avaliação de 90 dias (p>0,83) e 180 dias (p>0,78). Da mesma forma, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa, ao comparar os dentes do mesmo grupo em 90 e 180 dias. Conclusão: Foi observada retenção semelhante dos selamentos nos três tipos de isolamento.
