Longitudinal Mixed Membership trajectory models for disability survey data

Abstract: We develop new methods for analyzing discrete multivariate longitudinal data and apply them to functional disability data on U.S. elderly population from the National Long Term Care Survey (NLTCS), 1982-2004. Our models build on a mixed membership framework, in which individuals are allowed multiple membership on a set of extreme profiles characterized by time-dependent trajectories of progression into disability. We also develop an extension that allows us to incorporate birth-cohort effects, in order to asse… Show more

“…It must be modified for samples obtained through complex designs. For stratified simple random sample designs with just a few strata, one way of accounting for the design is to introduce the strata labels as covariate information through the population level common distribution of membership scores, similar to the method for incorporating cohort information in Manrique-Vallier (2010). Alternatively, when sample sizes are large enough within strata, GoM models can be estimated separately in each stratum.…”

“…This technique has been used to model trajectories toward physical disability [15] as well as pathways to dementia in the elderly [16, 17]. MMTMs combine features of longitudinal Multivariate Latent Trajectory Models [18] to identify distinct, canonical profiles, with features of cross-sectional Grade of Membership Models[19] to allow individuals to have weighted memberships in each profiles.…”

“…Mixed membership refers more generally to larger class of mixture models in which group assignment is not fixed but instead parameterized by a probability vector (Airoldi, Blei, Erosheva, & Fienberg, 2014). The concept of mixed membership has been applied in a number of statistical models across a wide variety of disciplines ranging from science publications (Erosheva, Fienberg, & Lafferty, 2004) to predicting trends in disability (Manrique-Vallier, 2014) to problem-solving strategies (Galyardt, 2012).…”
