Longitudinal Links Between Mothers’ and Fathers’ Warm Parenting and Children’s Subjective Well-Being: The Roles of Children’s Prosocial Behavior and Peer Relationships

Objectives: As infants spend extensive time in caregiving and educational institutions, there is a heightened emphasis on the significance of prosocial behavior in cultivating positive relationships. Consequently, this study explores the effects of mothers’ parenting stress on preschoolers' prosocial behavior, with a focus on the mediating effect of mothers’ emotion socialization and preschoolers' effortful control.Methods: A total of 215 mothers of children aged 3-5 years were included in this study. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and path analyses were conducted.Results: First, mothers’ parenting stress did not directly affect preschoolers’ prosocial behavior. Second, mothers’ parenting stress significantly affected preschoolers’ prosocial behavior, mediated by supportive emotion socialization. However, the unsupportive response of emotion socialization did not mediate the relationship between mothers’ parenting stress and preschoolers’ prosocial behavior. Third, mothers’ parenting stress significantly affected preschoolers’ prosocial behavior, mediated by preschoolers’ effortful control. Finally, the serial mediating effect of mothers’ parenting stress on preschoolers’ prosocial behavior, mediated by mothers’ emotion socialization and preschoolers’ effortful control, was significant.Conclusion: The results show that positive parenting aspects such as mothers’ supportive responses (rather than unsupportive responses) and preschoolers’ effortful control have an positive influence on preschoolers’ prosocial behavior. This finding underscores the necessity for targeted intervention programs to mitigate mothers’ parenting stress and enhancing supportive responses to improved prosocial behavior in preschoolers.

Objectives: This study examined longitudinal pathways from mothers’ and fathers’ warmth and control to children’s prosocial and externalizing problem behaviors as well as academic outcome. The study also explored whether children’s executive functioning difficulty plays the mediating role in the links between mothers’ and fathers’ parenting behaviors and children’s social and academic outcomes.Methods: Participants were 1,671 children and their parents which were retrieved from the Panel Study on Korean Children. Direct relations between parenting variables and children’s social and academic outcomes were examined. Indirect effects of children’s executive functioning difficulty were also investigated in these associations. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the longitudinal relations among maternal and paternal parenting behaviors, children’s executive functioning difficulty, and their social and academic outcomes. The bootstrapping method was also used to examine the indirect effects of children’s executive functioning difficulty in the links between parenting variables and children’s social and academic outcomes.Results: Mothers' and fathers' warm parenting was negatively related to children’s executive functioning difficulty, which in turn predicted their subsequent prosocial and externalizing problem behaviors, as well as academic outcome. Moreover, indirect relations between parenting variables and children’s social and academic outcomes via children’s executive functioning difficulty were found.Conclusion: The result of this study suggests the importance of parental warmth in children's social and academic outcomes. The present results also emphasize the role of children’s executive functioning difficulty as the pivotal mechanism that explains how mothers’ and fathers’ warm parenting predicts subsequent children’s outcomes in social and academic domains.

Impact of Parental Autonomy Support on Adolescent Life Satisfaction Through Creative Personality: Moderated Mediating Effect of Parental Structure Provision

Objectives: This study seeks to investigate the mediating effect of adolescent creative personality in the relationship between parental autonomy support and adolescent life satisfaction. Additionally, the study explores the moderated mediation effect of parental structure provision in the relationship between parental autonomy support, adolescent creative personality, and life satisfaction.Methods: A total of 2,590 first-year middle school students surveyed in 2018 from the “Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018; KCYPS,” produced by the National Youth Policy Institute, were targeted. Adolescents responded to questions about parental autonomy support, parental structure provision, creative personality, and life satisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS macro version 4.2 (Hayes, 2022); Model 4 was employed to analyze the mediating effect of adolescent creative personality and model 1 and 7 for the moderated mediating effect of parental structure provision.Results: This study derived the following key findings. First, a significant mediating effect of adolescent creative personality was observed in the relationship between parental autonomy support and adolescent life satisfaction. Parental autonomy support had a direct positive impact on adolescents’ life satisfaction. Additionally, as the level of parental autonomy support increased, adolescent creative personality also increased, which led to higher life satisfaction. Second, a moderated mediating effect of parental structure provision was observed for the impact of parental autonomy support on adolescent life satisfaction through adolescent creative personality.Conclusion: The results can be utilized as foundational information for parental education, and educational settings, thereby aiming to promote adolescents’ creativity and, subsequently, a satisfying life.
