Longitudinal differences in spirituality and religiousness between men and women in treatment for alcohol use disorders.

Abstract: This study compares men and women with alcohol use disorders on levels and trajectories of spirituality and religiousness over 30 months while controlling for critical covariates. Men (n=92) and women (n=65) entering abstinence-based treatment were assessed for drinking behavior, spirituality, and psychosocial variables in a longitudinal panel study. Multiple regression tested for baseline differences and multi-level models tested for differences from baseline to 6 months (early recovery) and from 6 to 30 mont… Show more

“…When examining predictors of the total BIAC score, women scored significantly higher than men on this measure of religious commitment, a finding that is also consistent with that of many previous studies (e.g., Inman, Iceberg, & McKeel, 2014; Krentzman, 2016), providing further evidence for construct validity. However, while individual items on the BIAC were strongly correlated with the total score, an exception was Item 9, whose correlation was < 0.30.…”

“…(2) Is there significant change in forgiveness over 30 months, and if so, to what magnitude and in what direction? We have evidence that both constructs increase significantly during this period (Krentzman, 2016). However, we do not know whether they increase at similar rates.…”

“…Some studies have focused on forgiveness and recovery. For example, in a subset of the data employed in the current study, forgiveness was observed to increase linearly 6 to 30 months after an episode of abstinence-based alcohol-use disorder treatment (Krentzman, 2016).…”
