Longitudinal Cytokine Profile in Patients With Mild to Critical COVID-19

Abstract: The cytokine release syndrome has been proposed as the driver of inflammation in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, studies on longitudinal cytokine profiles in patients across the whole severity spectrum of COVID-19 are lacking. In this prospective observational study on adult COVID-19 patients admitted to two Hong Kong public hospitals, cytokine profiling was performed on blood samples taken during early phase (within 7 days of symptom onset) and late phase (8 to 12 days of symptom onset). The pri… Show more

“…Unbalanced pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion is associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality [ 31 ]. To assess whether a hyperinflammatory state could show different results in male and female patients, we performed a multiplex bead-based immunoassay on plasma from high-grade and low-grade patients (for both female and male).…”

“…In clinical observation, cytokine profiling in patients with a severity spectrum of COVID-19 has been characterised ( 24 ). Cytokine storm is related to an increased death rate in patients with COVID-19, and the suppression of cytokine-induced injury may be the screening parameter of effective COVID-19 drugs ( 25 ).…”
