Longitudinal Changes in Quality of Life and Rates of Progressive Visual Field Loss in Glaucoma Patients

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the association between longitudinal changes in quality of life and rates of progressive visual field loss in glaucoma. Design Prospective observational cohort study. Participants 322 eyes of 161 patients with glaucomatous visual field loss recruited from the Diagnostic Innovations Glaucoma Study (DIGS) followed for an average of 3.5 ± 0.7 years. Methods All subjects had NEI VFQ-25 performed annually and standard automated perimetry (SAP) at 6-month intervals. Subjects were included i… Show more

“…Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by optic atrophy and visual field loss and has become a major disease that affects/ human life, which could result in blindness because of the death of RGCs [23, 24]. Presently, although surgery or drugs are often used to control IOP, patients with controlled IOP still suffer from optic atrophy and RGC apoptosis [25, 26].…”

“…Indeed, much of the best research in the area of visual disability and glaucoma has used this methodology yielding sound evidence to show that patients with the condition have difficulties with mobility, driving, reading and other everyday tasks. 28,29 PROMs are, however, potentially limited by subjectivity, different personal expectations and knowledge of disease. 30 Aside from their use in research studies, PROMs are not routinely used in clinical practice.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Therefore, those individuals might be at risk for lower health-related quality of life (QOL). [7][8][9][10] Sleep-related problems have been observed frequently in visually impaired individuals. [11][12][13][14][15] Reportedly, especially in people without light perception (LP), inhibited transmission of light signals to the suprachiasmatic nuclei might cause sleeprelated problems because of external desynchronization of the biological clock.…”
