These authors, fully entrenched in 'transatlantic celebrity' (Morton, 2015), were read particularly widely throughout Europe and were often accused of fanciful writing (Glaser, 1859). In simplicity, the poems and novels of early literature in the US were authors' attempts to differentiate their works from those of their British counterparts and establish a distinct and recognisable 'American' voice in publication.…”
