Long‐Wavelength Optical Phonons of AgBrxCl1−x Mixed Crystals

Abstract: Infrared reflectivity and second-order Raman scattering in the mixed crystal system AgBr,C11-, were studied a t 77 K. The T O ( r ) and L O ( r ) phonon frequencies obtained by means of a Kramers-Kronig analysis shift continuously between their energetic positions in the pure components indicating one-mode behaviour of the system. This result is discussed in view of a recent model that describes the optical modes of a mixed crystal. The LO(r) phonon frequencies taken from the Raman spectra are found to be sligh… Show more

“…Silver halide crystals AgCl x Br 1Àx (0oxo1) can be attractive candidates as the hosts for mid-IR solid state or fiber lasers that operate at room temperature. All these crystals (with any value of x) have low-optical phonon frequencies u ph and, for example, u ph ¼ 80 cm À1 for AgBr crystals and u ph ¼ 103 cm À1 for AgCl crystals [10]. The properties of silver halide crystals and of fibers extruded from these crystals have been under active study by the Applied Physics Group at Tel-Aviv University.…”

“…This quenching is the main reason why Mid-IR luminescence has been observed at room temperature only in few materials [6][7][8]. Silver halide crystals are among the few which exhibit low optical phonon frequencies (phonon frequency of 80 cm À1 in AgBr crystals and 103 cm À1 in AgCl crystals [9]). Doped silver halides can therefore be attractive candidates for fiber lasers or solid-state lasers that operate in the Mid-IR at room temperature, The properties of silver halide crystals and fibers made of AgCl x Br 1Àx (0oxo1) have been studied for many years by the Applied Physics Group in Tel-Aviv University.…”
