Long-term weight loss maintenance: assessment of a behavioral and supplemented fasting regimen.

Abstract: This analysis assessed 18-30-month weight loss maintenance following treatment with both behavior modification and supplemented fasting procedures for 400 patients. Fifty-five per cent of the patients who started treatment discontinued prior to completing the program. Patients who completed treatment lost a mean of 83.9 per cent of their excess weight, but regained an average of 59 per cent to 82 per cent of their initial excess weight by 30 months

“…In one study, researchers examined the weight trajectories of participants on the basis of how many follow-up appointments they attended (Hovell et al, 1988). The initial amount of weight Table 1 Features It is unclear how many of these participants were in the restrictive diet being evaluated here versus in another study condition.…”

“…Numerous researchers have concluded that regardless of the method used to lose weight, a behavioral treatment component is necessary to achieve long-term maintenance (Bray & Gray, 1988;Brownell & Kramer, 1989;Hovell, et al, 1988;Kalodner & DeLucia, 1990 Although research has compared weight loss programs with a behavioral component to those without, this investigator was unable to find any research conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different behavioral methods in combination with the same form of caloric restriction.…”

“…In clinical programs that use VLCDs, attrition rates are very high (3,4); however, among those who remain in the program, weight losses are again excellent. For example, Hovell et al (4) reported that 56% of patients dropped out of a 16-to 26-wk VLCD program, but among those who completed treatment, men lost 28.6 kg and women lost 24 kg.…”
