Long-term use of noble metal alloy coated urinary catheters reduces recurrent CAUTI and decreases proinflammatory markers

Abstract: Background: The objective of this study was to investigate a case of a permanently (suprapubic) catheterized woman with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The patient had suffered from recurrent catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) since 2009, despite several prevention approaches and attempts. In 2013, the patient’s catheter was substituted for the BIP Foley Catheter, coated with a noble metal alloy (NMA) of gold, silver, and palladium. Method: This is a … Show more

“…In our study, no adverse reactions were registered that could be related to the NbMC ETT coating. Urinary catheters containing this coating have shown reduced catheter-related urinary tract infections with long-term use [41][42][43]. However, it should be noted that NbMC urinary catheters are made of silicone or latex, not PVC like the NbMC ETT in our study.…”

“…During our study no adverse reactions were registered that could be related to the NbMC ETT coating. According to some reports, the noble metal coating has been shown to reduce catheter-related urinary tract infections with long-term use [58][59][60]. However, it should be noted that the NbMC urinary catheter is made of silicone or latex, not PVC like the NbMC ETT in our study.…”
