Long‐term trends and geographic variations in the survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: Analysis of 11 312 patients in Taiwan

Abstract: There are geographic variations in the survival rates of patients with HCC. Survival has been improving gradually over the past 20 years, probably due to earlier detection of HCC or to improved patient care.

“…Since Taiwan is an endemic area for HBV, routine screening with ultrasonography and a-fetoprotein for patients with chronic liver disease could have higher detection rates of small size HCC. 27 A study investigating the long-term survival rates of HCC patients in Taiwan 28 revealed that improved survival of HCC in recent years, earlier Wilcoxon signed ranks test shows 5th TNM staging is larger than the 6th TNM staging (p < 0.001). This study found better prognosis in tumors with <5 cm without vascular invasion than in those with segmental vascular invasion.…”

“…In China, where chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is prevalent, the incidence of HCC is Ͼ30 cases per 100 000 population (3,4 ). Despite numerous advances in the treatment of HCC during the last decade, the 5-year survival rate remains Ͻ40% (5,6 ), and late presentation remains an important obstacle to successful treatment. In fact, many HCC patients have already developed locally advanced disease or distant metastasis by the time of presentation (5,6 ).…”

In fact, many HCC patients have already developed locally advanced disease or distant metastasis by the time of presentation (5,6 ). In this regard, biomarkers have been developed for early HCC detection (7 ), with ␣-fetoprotein (AFP) being the most widely used clinically.…”

“…Because of hepatitis B prevention programs (vaccination), the epidemiological pattern of HBV prevalence changes with time in most Asian countries. In Taiwan due immunization program of HBV, the percentage of HBV-related HCC in children and adolescents decreased [38,39] . In Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, the prevalence of HBV infection in children have declined since the beginning of the vaccination [40,41] .…”
